Private Tuition

Musicians from around the world and at all levels visit Denise for private lessons. These are suited to the needs of the individual and can deal with particular issues – both technical and musical - that the conductor wishes to address.

For those who wish to work in some depth, a series of lessons can be arranged to help the student establish a clear, musical technique that serves the music and the musicians who play or sing it. The aim is to convey as much as possible by gesture rather than speech.

Denise’s teaching combines the musical tradition of the Wagner-Liszt school with the Toscanini-Barzin technique. It can be described as controlled physical movement, a fluent, varied baton technique and independent use of the left hand. The principles of the technique apply equally to those choral conductors who work mainly without a baton and the lessons are adapted to accommodate this.
